Author: Christa OConner
There's nothing better on a hot summer day than a nice cold treat. Ice cream has been the sweet treat of choice for years and years, and with the invention of the homemade ice cream maker, enjoying this treat without ever having to leave your house is finally possible. There are many benefits of owning an ice cream maker beyond just the idea that you can produce ice cream whenever you feel like it. There are endless flavor combinations and possibilities, only limited by your imagination and the ingredients you can find in your local grocery stores. By controlling which ingredients you add, you can have healthier options which may be better than the ones available in your grocer's freezer aisle.

There are a number of ice cream makers available on the market and most are extremely affordable. Because it's an entertaining and affordable activity that you can share with the whole family, making the investment of purchasing an ice cream maker can ensure a lot of fun and tasty times in the future. Once you have decided on the perfect machine, here is a delicious homemade ice cream recipe you can try. This recipe calls for an ice cream maker that uses a gel freezer container. You'll need the following ingredients:
2 cups whole milk
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup fat-free powdered milk
8 eggs yolks
1 cup heavy whipping cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 cups of fresh, pureed fruit
Most ice cream makers require that the gel container is placed in the freezer for 6-24 hours so read the instructions to make sure it will be ready to go by the time you are ready to start making the ice cream.
Step 1- Heat the milk, sugar, and powdered milk in a large pot to a simmer over medium heat. Stir the ingredients until they dissolve then turn down the heat to low just to keep it warm.
Step 2- Separate the yolks from 8 large eggs and put them in a separate dish.
Step 3- Whip the egg yolks until they thicken, usually about 2 minutes with a hand mixer on low speed.
Step 4- Slowly add 1 cup of the hot milk mixture into the thickened egg yolks while continuously stirring until blended. Once this is done, pour the mixture back into the pot of hot milk and increase the heat to medium. Constantly stir the mixture with a wooden spoon until it thickens to the consistency of gravy.
Step 5- Continue to stir and heat the mixture until it reaches between 170 and 180 degrees F.
Step 6- Stir in the whipping cream and vanilla extract. Cover and place into the refrigerator for at least 6-8 hours before proceeding to the next step.
Step 7- Mix the fruit into the refrigerated cream mixture. Once you have done this, you can take the fruit and cream and place it into the ice cream maker's frozen gel container. Place the container in the ice cream maker and turn it on. Once the machine has started it will take about 20-30 minutes until it will be of proper consistency. Eat right away, or store in an airtight container in the freezer.
Now you can enjoy your very own bowl of delicious homemade ice cream, as simple as that!
