Author: Aunindita Bhatia
Camping is an art form. For many of us it is nostalgic, and part of that nostalgia comes from cooking over an open flame. Read this article about how to make this trip the best one yet by picking the right foods to take camping.

1.Shish Kebabs
Shish Kebabs are not the easiest of foods to make while camping, but they can definitely help make your camping trip unforgettable. If you want to make shish kebabs at your next camping trip or get-together, you will need:
  • Skewers
  • Cuts of meat - chicken, steak, pork, lamb, or shrimp are most often used*
  • Semi-Crisp Vegetables – peppers, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, and/or cucumber are most often used*
  • Salad Dressing
*Remember the beauty of shish kabobs is that you can put anything that you want on them, so don't hesitate to be creative when choosing your foods.
The night before you plan to fix the shish kabobs soak them overnight in water with a dash of salt. Also, soak vegetables in a bowl of salad dressing. Arrange the meat and vegetables artfully on the skewers. Now, separate some hot coals from the fire into the corner of the fire pit, and place two large stones close together. Next, place the shish kebabs over the gap between the stones. Occasionally spin the shish kabobs to ensure that they cook evenly. Be sure that the meat is cooked thoroughly before serving.
2. S'mores
Every camping kid's favorite, s'mores are a delightful treat in any camping trip and thus is included in the list of best foods to take camping. Be prepared, however, because they can be a mess. At the grocery store, you will want to purchase:
  • A box of graham crackers
  • A bag of marshmallows
  • Some chocolate (Most people use large Hershey bars since they are flat.)
Figure out how many s'mores you would want to make and lay out graham crackers, placing the chocolate on top of each one. Roast a marshmallow and place it on top of the chocolate-cracker. Now use another graham cracker to sandwich it. It is best enjoyed immediately, so give it out and then begin roasting another marshmallow and repeating the process.
3. Beans
Beans are cheap and easy to cook on the fire. Get a couple of different kinds though, especially if you are going to be camping for a while. All you have to do is open the can of beans (don't forget your can opener or knife), pour them in a pot, and place them over the fire. Dinner will be ready shortly.
4. Hot Dogs
If you have never eaten a wiener roasted over a fire, you are in for a surprise. Wieners made over an open fire have a distinct taste that can never be replaced. Before leaving town make sure you have enough packages of wieners and hot dog buns to go around several times over. Also, grab all the important condiments such as mustard, ketchup, and relish that you may need.
When you get your fire going well, just put a wiener onto a sharp stick and ensure that it is on good. Drop the wiener into the fire, keeping a good distance between your hand and the flame. Rotate it as it cooks so that it is cooked well on both sides and then place it on a bun. Add the condiments that you want and enjoy.
With the above list of best foods to take camping, surely you would have a yummy campaign trip with your friends and loved ones.
