Original and unique design of cupcake toppings are what people looking for when buying or making cupcakes. Some types of icing that you can use for decorating cupcakes are: buttercream, snow-white buttercream, ready-to-use decorators, royal, rolled fondant, quick-pour fondant, fluffy-boiled icing, whipped cream, and stabilized whipped cream. Each type of icing has different texture, flavor, color, and consistency. Different types of cupcake icing also serve different purposes. Here are some steps on how to decorate your cupcakes with different icing.

1. Covering cupcakes with spatula
Using spatula for spreading the icing is one of the most general and easiest ways to decorate your cupcakes. You will need a spatula and icing with medium consistency such as buttercream and stabilized whipped cream. Put a dollop of cream on the center-top of a cupcake, spread the cream from the center-top toward the edges of the cake, and smooth the icing using the spatula edge. If you want a fluffy cupcake top, touch the iced surface lightly with your spatula blade and lift up.
2. Decorating with candy melts, ganache, or poured icing
This method is easy, simple, and less messy. Besides the cupcakes and the icing, you will also need cooling grid, cookie sheet, and disposable decorating bag. First, place the cupcake upside down on the cooling grid placed above the cookie sheet. Pour the icing onto the cupcake using a pan or a measuring cup. Whether to coat the cupcake completely or just glaze the top part of the cupcake with the icing is your choice. Let the icing set.
3. Using rolled fondant
Fondant gives smooth, silky appearance of a cupcake. To cover a whole cupcake with fondant, you need to the measure the top of the cupcake's diameter and the opposite sides. For instance, a 2 inch wide cupcake with two sides each 11/2 inch high will need 5 inch diameter rolled fondant. To cover the cupcake, spread buttercream lightly on the cupcake. Roll out 1/8 inch thick fondant and cover it on all cupcake surface. Cut the remaining fondant at the cake base with spatula and smooth it with your fingers.
4. Covering cupcakes with star-shaped decorating tip
This technique is very easy and quick. You need a star-shaped decorating tip, disposable decorating bags, and icing with thin to medium consistency such as buttercream, snow-white buttercream, royal, or whipped cream. Hold the decorating tip at 90 degree angle about ¼ inch above the top of the cupcake, pipe a spiral icing from outer edge to inner part, stop the pressure and pull away. Add another swirl (smaller) on top of the cupcake, end at the cupcake center, pull the tip straight up, and pull away.
