Wine production in Australia began during the early 1800s. During this time, winemakers struggled because of the unpredictable climate in the area and their lack of territorial knowledge. This changed before the turn of the century when Southern and Western Australia marked itself as the ideal location for vineyards and wine production. Various Margaret River wineries came about and started a legacy that is cherished by wine connoisseurs all over the world.


Margaret River wineries started during the 1960s by a group of winemakers who found out that the areas surrounding the Margaret River were ideal for producing superior and high-quality wines. Winemakers were able to assess the area and conclude that the climate was similar to that of the Mediterranean. This meant that the weather was constant throughout the year allowing proper cultivation of quality grapes. The soil in that region was also very fertile. These assessments sealed the decision to give this area a try for wine production.

From there, cultivation and production expanded. Today, more than 5,000 hectares of vineyards and more than a hundred Margaret River wineries are located in the area.
Margaret river wineries boast a process that guarantees superior quality wines. This process involves using French oak barrels to help the fermentation process. These barrels contribute to the taste of the wines giving them a distinct hint of wood along with its bittersweet taste.

The Margaret River Wine comes in two varieties-red and white. The top three wines that were produced in terms of volume were Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot. Also produced are Chardonnay, Semillion and Sauvignon Blanc.

In order to select the best Margaret River Wine, here are some tips you can follow:

-Decide on the type of wine. Narrow down your choices as there are various types of wine such as white wine, red wine, sparkling, fortified and dessert wine.

-Decide on your preference by relying on your taste buds! Do you want dry wines or sweet wines? Take note that dry wines lack sweetness typical in some wines. How about tannins-would you like wines with low or high tannins? Tannins are vital ingredients in wines that come from the stalks and skins of grapes, which usually produce a bitter taste.

Short palate or long palate? This determines the amount of time the taste and scent of the wine lingers after swallowing. Some people like their wines to have a lasting taste while others prefer it shorter. Consider the acidity in your wine as well. Your wine's longevity depends on the acidity: less can spoil it while too much can make it sour. Make sure the wine has the right amount so that the taste does not fall flat. The right amount of acidity can make the other flavours such as fruit, spice and herbs stand out.

You can also choose between light bodied wines as opposed to full bodied wines. Full bodied wines are more dense and thicker than light bodied ones.

-Buy wines that are well looked after! Buy wines from liquor shops that take proper care of their merchandise. Their wines should not be exposed to extreme conditions such as heat or cold. Make sure the wine is filled up, properly sealed and have no signs of leakage.
