Red Bush Tea

Author: Abhi Nair
Unlike other teas, this beautiful red bush tea, is not really derived from a plant. This tea is from a herb from the region of South Africa. This tea is known by different names in different areas - Red bush tea, roobios or the red tea! Whatever the name, the tea is the same and the flavor and aroma is perfect! Unlike other herbal teas, this beverage has benefits from its minerals, anti oxidants and the best part is that it has no caffeine!
Well, the very fact that it contains anti oxidants means that it is perfect if you are trying to put a stop to aging! It also contains flavonoid which is great for the heart and surprisingly also promotes hair growth. Some other medical benefits are helping the digestion of food, decreases stomach cramps, counter acts constipation, reduces insomnia, calms frayed nerves etc.

But how do you really brew, make and consume this beautiful tea? Well, it is more or less similar to any other tea. Start by boiling some water. When bubbles start rising to the top, add some red bush tea bag or red bush tea leaves, as the case may be. The measurement is usually one tea bag or one tea spoon full of red bush per cup. Let the aromatic tea brew for some time in the pot. Longer the brewing, more the anti oxidants will be released in the beverage.
Once you see the brilliant red color of the beverage and can smell the sweet and nutty red bush, you know the brewing is complete. This can be served plain and had it just like that. But many people prefer having the red bush with hot or cold milk or with a dash of lemon to bring out the flavors in full. In fact, red bush makes for a great iced tea also. Just add some honey, lemon and ice, and voila! iced tea is ready to serve.
Just like ginger and ginger tea, red bush is used in few cuisines as an ingredient to prepare daily meals, mainly because of minerals and anti oxidant properties.
So, whether it is a careful brew of red bush tea or a thoughtfully prepared meal with red bush, this wonderful and colorful herb never ceases to tickle the taste buds of all of us. Enjoy it the way you like it and let it weave its magic!
