Cook Great Food Like Your Mama Used To Do

Author: Dave Chewter
Even the kitchen at your own house can seem rather boring from time to time. But taking up cooking as a hobby changes that. You will start to look forward to spending time in your kitchen, and friends and family members will look forward to the results. The tips below will get you started.

Using nonstick pots and pans will require that you use utensils made of silicone or nylon. Metal or wooden utensils are hard and can damage the surface of your cookware, making the nonstick surface unreliable and even flaking off pieces of the coating into your food. Not only will this ruin your meal, it could cost you your life!

Rather than using water or milk in a specific recipe, try a different liquid to add a new flavor. You could use chicken broth or juice, instead of water. Buttermilk, yogurt and sour cream can be great substitutes for milk. A simple switch like changing a liquid in a recipe can improve the nutritional quality while giving the dish a whole new spin in taste.

Give pre-cut, raw potatoes a cold water bath for a half-hour prior to frying for crispier French fries. When you soak sliced potatoes in cold water, it strengthens their fibers, so that they can stand up to the heat when being deep fried.

To truss a turkey means to tie it up with string. It helps to keep the legs and wings of the turkey close so that the bird cooks more evenly. If you do not do this, the wings or legs will burn easier.

An easy but effective method of cooking some interesting new foods is to just vary your sauces and spices you use in them. Using new marinades, topping with a different sauce or using alternative spice combinations can really change the entire flavor of a dish. Though you may not even realize they exist, ethnic grocery stores in your town can be a great source of unique and flavorful spices to try.

If you want to make fat free stew or soup, begin by using a soup stock or broth that is fat free. Your soup should contain mostly vegetables and lean meats to keep it low-fat. Before eating the soup, allow it to refrigerate for several hours. When it's chilled enough, you'll see hard fat clumps floating on top. You can then remove the hardened fat and discard. This will equal about 100 calories that you have saved from each tablespoon of fat you removed.

Are you partial to using fresh basil in your cooking? In a glass put a lot of fresh basil inside. Fill the glass with water till the stems are covered. Place it on your kitchen counter to keep it fresh for weeks! You can even grow new basil plants if you feel like changing the water every day or so. The stems will sprout roots; that's the wonder of plant life. If you keep the basil trimmed regularly, this will promote growth and allow a decent supply of basil on an ongoing basis.

After having a big Thanksgiving turkey, don't pass up those leftovers. The meat can be cut up, stored in separate bags, and kept in the freezer. This will keep the turkey fresh enough to make salads and sandwiches for a couple of weeks.

Use these tips as-is, or spice them up and make them your own. Soon you'll be making meals that your family and you will love and look forward to. Cooking can help you lose weight, save money and create stronger bonds with your family. Make eating a pleasure instead of a necessity.
