Low Fat Tiramasu

Author: Fleeps
Tiramisu means "pick me up" in Italian as this dessert contains coffee to wake you up after your meal! I love Tiramisu, but it's simply calorific. An average serving contains between 600 and 1440 calories!* Sounds ridiculous, but if you consider the traditional recipe contains cream, mascapone cheese, eggs, booze and sugar.... yes, it's rather naughty, but seriously, 1440 calories? That's three quarters of the calories you require for one day!

So, here's a little recipe which tastes similar to tiramasu and is a mere 277 calories per serving. If you're Italian and reading this you will probably laugh. Yes, it's not much like traditional tiramasu, but it will satisfy tiramasu cravings without the risk of gaining 5 pounds immediately. Plus there's no raw eggs, so use decaffeinated coffee and leave out the booze and you can serve it to pregnant ladies and kids!
My top tip is to make this the day before you plan to eat it! It will taste infinitely better if chilled overnight. Also, don't oversoak the sponges, and make the coffee fairly strong.
Time: 10 mins hands on time + 4 hours chilling
Cost: 38p per serving
Calories: 277 per serving

Low Fat Tiramasu: Serves 4

  • 150g low fat soft cheese
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 40g caster sugar, or to taste
  • 350g low fat Greek yogurt
  • 200ml (approximately) strong black coffee
  • 25ml amaretto, or to taste (optional)
  • 100g Sponge fingers
  • Cocoa powder for dusting
  1. Before you start, find the serving dishes you wish to use. You can either use four individual dishes (or glasses) or one large dish (such as a small lasagne dish).
  2. Blend the soft cheese, vanilla and sugar until smooth. Stir in the yogurt gently until combined. Set to one side.
  3. Mix the amaretto and coffee and pour into a shallow bowl. Dip the half the sponge fingers into the boozy coffee, one at a time for a few seconds turning once. They need to be soaked through but not soggy and dripping. If you cannot pick them up without them breaking they are too soggy. Make an even layer of the sponge fingers in the bottom of your dishes or dish.
  4. Spoon half the creamy mixture over the sponges. Repeat step 3 with the remaining half of the sponge fingers, arranging them evenly over the first creamy layer.
  5. Spoon the final half of the creamy mixture evenly over the second layer of sponge fingers. Cover the dish or dishes with clingflim and pop in the fridge to chill for at least 4 hours, but preferably overnight. Just before serving, dust with cocoa powder.
